On this three hour paddle we’ll be in calm and protected waters exploring one of the largest harbors on the east side of Buzzards Bay. As we start out we’ll pass large waterfront summer homes and marinas sheltering million dollar yachts. In contrast as we paddle around Bassett’s Island, we’ll see that it is almost totally undeveloped; covered with scrub cedar and pine and faced with salt spray roses. Bassett’s Island shelters Pocasset Harbor and the homes on the shoreline from southeast winds and storms, while the more exposed south leg of the island is public land with a great beach for a shore break and quick summer swim. The beach faces out into Buzzards Bay and from it we may see ships traveling from Boston to New York heading to or from the Cape Cod Canal.
